Tasted: May 06, 2011 Drink: 2024+ Issue: 42 Tasting note: This is the ripest wine in the range with plum, mocha and notes of prune that merge into rich, powerful and impressively dense broad-shouldered flavors that possess a velvety texture on the dazzlingly persistent finish. There are plenty of fireworks with this wine and it is undeniably dramatic but it's quite a bit riper than I personally prefer and it's not clear at this early stage whether it will become port-like in time. Optimists will age the wine and pessimists will drink it young.

The underlying material here is superb and this should easily improve for the next 12 to 15 years and last for an equivalent period thereafter.

The nose speaks primarily of plum and floral aromas that are in keeping with the sappy, rich, powerful and broad-shouldered flavors that drench the palate with dry extract on the very firmly structured and hugely long finish. This should be a great wine in time.

The hallmark minerality of this wine is very much in evidence on the palate staining flavors that possess a silky and highly sophisticated mouth feel while culminating in a dusty, explosive and gorgeously long finish. This does that wonderful slow build from the mid-palate to the finale and this should age exceptionally well.

The concentrated and deeply powerful big-bodied flavors brim with dry extract that both buffers the very firm tannic spine as well as imbues the mouth feel with a velvety texture. There is fine balance and excellent length though not quite the sheer depth of the Bonnes Mares.

Tasting note: An extremely fresh, cool and reserved nose offers up notes of an array of different red berries, plum, smoke and a mineral reduction note like one often finds in classic Chablis. There is outstanding volume, size and weight to the broad-shouldered, intense and energetic flavors where the supporting tannins possess a high level of phenolic maturity while culminating in an explosive but impeccably well-balanced finish. This is quite firmly structured but not to the point where it will need 20 years of cellar time.
