Despite all the size and weight, the superbly long finish is linear and tension-filled. Like the Charmes, this is not at present highly complex and my range again offers the benefit of the doubt based on the excellent quality of the underlying material as well as the fine track record of this wine for rewarding long-term aging.

Tasting note: This is somewhat riper than the Clos St. Denis with an especially complex array of cassis, black cherry and earth nuances on the relatively elegant nose. The depth continues onto the rich, full-bodied and attractively vibrant broad-shouldered flavors that are muscular yet sleek. There is outstanding intensity and depth of material to the firm and mouth coating finish that is shaped by very firm but ripe tannins on the balanced, intensely mineral-driven and clearly built-to-age finish. Terrific.

A background touch of wood does not interfere with the clear expression of the floral and very ripe raspberry, cassis and plum aromas that lead to velvety, round and very rich flavors that possess a seductive texture and drench the palate on the gorgeously long finish. There is better phenolic maturity of the structural elements and a better sense of overall harmony as well.

The supple and delicious flavors are lacy to the point of being almost delicate yet there is focused power on the mouth coating finish. The tannins possess a dusty character and unlike the Combottes, there is excellent complexity and flat out stunning length delivered in a style that emphasizes finesse. Fans of power and weight will wish to look elsewhere but for those who enjoy elegance, this is a textbook example of what I call power without weight.
