There is real sophistication to the tannins supporting the medium-bodied flavors that possess wonderful intensity on the impeccably well-balanced and harmonious finish. This is flat out terrific and as good a young Petits Vougeots as I can remember. This should amply repay 6 to 9 years of cellar time.

There is excellent size, weight and punch to the large-scaled but not especially powerful medium-bodied flavors that brim with plenty of mouth coating dry extract, all wrapped in a particularly vibrant, precise and hugely long finish. As good as the Clos St. Jacques is, and it is indisputably excellent, there is just another dimension of depth present here.

As to the bottle in the big CSJ tasting, there is evident secondary character to the leafy and herbal tea-suffused aromas of red currant, forest floor and spice, all of which is trimmed in very subtle oak nuances. The refined, delicious and vibrant middle weight flavors exude a fine bead of minerality on the slightly lean and drying finish. I would be inclined to drink this now with food. 89/now+. Another bottle tried in 2016 was better balanced and more harmonious overall and merited a score of 92. Yet another bottle tasted in October 2017 was so reduced that it displayed mercaptans and to my taste was completely undrinkable.

This is not a generously proportioned wine but the intrinsic class and finesse of a fine CSJ are in evidence, which will permit it to be enjoyed now but also to continue cellaring it over the short to medium-term. Tasted several times in the past few years with consistent notes.

Despite the seductive texture the overall impression is that this understated effort is both very serious and notably austere, indeed this is a classic Combe aux Moines that is built to age. In a word, superb.
