While fully mature, the '95 LT has the potential to be very long lived vintage, and even at almost 30 years of age, it's clear that it still has decades ahead of it. Tasted many times since release, including twice in 2024, with very consistent results.

Fantastically pure with the classic spice box, hoisin and soy nose followed by big, rich, very structured flavors that display notes of earth, leather and tea. The tannins are big, ripe and are completely buffered by the sap with length that is simply phenomenal. This remains completely primary in character and seems not to have budged at all since it was bottled. A fine, if not genuinely great, vintage for La T?che that is softer in the mouth than the '96 Grands Ech and this should improve for most of another decade and last for 50 years. Very classy juice. Note: while it's happened only twice in my experience, the '96 can be intensely vegetal on the nose and not exhibit the purity that the wine is justifiably famous for; I also had two recent bottles that displayed distinct signs of brett. However, I have tasted so many outstanding bottles of the '96 LT that I view these examples as outliers.

The big tannins are completely wrapped in velvet and while they are by no means invisible, they are beautifully well-integrated, indeed the word seamless comes to mind. This is almost certainly destined to become one of the all-time great vintages of La T?che. Moreover, among the many bottles that I have been blessed to have tried, I have never had one that was anything less than sensational. However, note well that the '99 LT is going to be a long-distance runner so a strategy of cellar and forget is strongly advised, at least for the next decade or so. Multiple, and consistent, notes.

The usual La T?che aromatic fireworks are present as the highly perfumed, seductive, spicy and pungent floral notes make for an utterly brilliant nose. The broad-shouldered flavors remain somewhat understated and while there is superb concentration, the unexpected sense of reserve I noted in my original review is still here as there is even a certain coolness that is extremely rare for the 2003 vintage. Perhaps equally unexpected is that the '03 La T?che is essentially a wine that marries finesse and purity with power because even though it is dense, it remains balanced and never heavy. To be sure, the effects of the vintage are noticeable as the finish is very ripe with notes of plum, mocha and coffee. Again, though this is only 8 years of age, nothing has changed to modify my view that this should be capable of lasting 50 years, indeed I have extended my initial drinking window somewhat. As with the 2005, this should ultimately be a great La T?che though it's going to require plenty of patience until it gets there.

At present, this is taut and precise with the lithe muscularity of a world class gymnast yet it is not lean or unduly tight as there is a generosity to the mid-palate that serves to buffer the underlying tannic spine that will permit this to age for decades. This is clearly a great wine that epitomizes the concept of power without weight.

Not surprisingly, this is still structured to the point of being chewy yet it is never rustic or coarse because the gorgeously detailed palate impression is buffered by buckets of dry extract. As readers know, I often use the word Zen to describe the kind of inner harmony of a great vintage of Roman?e-Conti but rarely with La T?che yet in 2005, the LT has this element of inner calm and grace as well. In sum, I remain confident that this huge but utterly classy and stylish wine will go down as one of the all-time great LT's provided that you have the patience to wait as it is going to be a very long distance runner. I should note that two bottles tasted in April 2016 showed some troubling signs of brett; however I had these bottles in China and it's possible that the storage and shipping were not what they should have been though. At 13 years of age, the once reserved nose is starting to come out of its shell as there is plenty of the hallmark spice and floral components of a classic LT. The big and generous flavors are an exercise in contrasts as they are at once round and rich while remaining wonderfully defined and precise with an intense minerality coming to the fore, all wrapped in a linear, palate staining and explosive finish. Even though this is still very much on the way up, the palate impression is entirely harmonious and the transparency and purity of expression are something to experience. In a word, magnificent and for my taste, I would continue to cellar this for up to another decade before starting to enjoy the '06 LT from time to time.

There is moderately good density to the delicious and intensely mineral-driven medium-bodied flavors that possess excellent delineation on the driving and still somewhat youthfully austere finish. Compared to what is normal for La T?che 2007 is a lighter-weight vintage though I underscore that this is a dense wine in the context relative to the typical 2007. While the '07 LT could certainly be enjoyed now, especially if given 30 minutes or so of air, to my taste it is still clearly on the way up and would best be held for another 5 to 7 years first. At age 17 the '99 Richebourg is clearly signaling that it's going to require 20 to 25 years to really be at its peak. At the same time, there is sufficient mid-palate sap to at least make it approachable sooner, perhaps in seven to 10 years. In my view 1999 is one of the great vintages for this fabled wine. Many, and consistent, notes save for one bottle that displayed an annoying amount of brett.

While this is showing some signs of aromatic development, it's clear that this classically styled Richebourg has a long way to go before it's ready for prime time. This still requires some coaxing before it reveals wonderfully complex aromas of a simply incredible array of black fruits, earth, spice, crushed herbs and notes of hoisin and clove that lead to focused and medium-bodied flavors that are supple, rich and impressively powerful, all wrapped in a superbly well-detailed and focused if overtly austere finish. I particularly like the almost pungent minerality and this particular vintage of DRC Riche is evolving quite slowly though my suggested initial drinking window of 2019+ still seems appropriate based on the most recent bottle. Tasted several times recently with very consistent notes.

I had not tried the '02 Riche in several years so it was interesting to see how it's progressing. The expressive though very cool nose is finally beginning to display the initial hints of maturity with the classic dried rose petal and spice nuances adding both elegance and breadth to the pretty mix of red fruit and plum scents. There is a beguiling mouth feel to the intensely mineral-driven broad-shouldered flavors that are at once powerful but sleek, all wrapped in a muscular and palate staining finish. The refined palate impression is considerably enhanced by the dense but extremely fine tannins, in fact so much so that while this is still very clearly on the way up it could actually be drunk now with pleasure. That said I would still strongly advise holding this strikingly pretty effort for another 6 to 10 years first. I should note that while I have had relatively consistent notes over the years, occasionally I land on a bottle that seems herbaceous and almost vegetal; why this variation occurs isn't clear but nonetheless it does happen.

The broad-shouldered flavors possess a beguiling texture even though the supporting structure makes itself felt very quickly on the firm but not hard finish that goes on and on. While this is still clearly extremely young 2006 is one of the few vintages of the DRC Richebourg with less than 15 years of age that could be reasonably approached now though I stress that there is still considerable upside development potential remaining. In a word, terrific. Tasted four in the several years with consistent results.

This is a karate champion of a wine that isn't especially big but the power and authority of the punch is hard to believe. I suspect that despite the fact that the '07 Riche will not be a long distance runner by the standards that are typical here, this will be a late bloomer in terms of permitting a true assessment of its character and potential, meaning at least a decade.

Interestingly, the tannins are slightly less refined than those of the Ech?zeaux but it matches it in virtually ever other category. This may very well be the best vintage for this cuv?e since 1999 when the domaine began releasing it periodically.

If there is a short coming, it's that there is limited depth though there is enough material that it may develop with a few years of bottle age.

The fully mature, ripe and agreeable spicy nose reveals plenty of secondary characters (though no sous-bois) that include leather, exotic tea and a whiff of dried rose petal. The delicious and still nicely vibrant medium-bodied flavors possess a lovely sweetness while delivering excellent length where the only nit is a touch of warmth, along with a hint of rusticity. Prior to 2008 I had tasted this on multiple occasions with nary a poor bottle and this most recent one suggests that it should continue to hold well. In a word, lovely.

There is a lovely sense of vibrancy to the pure, sweet and remarkably powerful middle weight flavors that possess more volume than usual, all wrapped in a persistent and mouth coating finish. The amount of s?ve is impressive as is the sheer spiciness and this is a good deal more refined than in most vintages. I should also observe that while I found the brett off-putting, most people loved it. I have only tried this one bottle recently and thus I don't know whether it was representative of the wine in general and thus my score offers the benefit of the doubt that it wasn't.

A wonderfully fresh, cool and relatively restrained nose reflects notes of ultra-spicy and floral dark berry fruit nose evidences only mild hints of secondary character. The seductively rich yet attractively vibrant medium weight flavors are shaped by a still moderately firm core of ripe tannins before culminating in a relatively robust and powerful finish. While with 30+ minutes of air this could be approached with pleasure, for my taste the 2002 Ech is still very much on the way up and will likely need the better part of another 4 to 7 years before it arrives at its full apogee.

Based on this bottle, the '04 Ech appears to be fully mature and probably should be drunk up over the next 5ish years. The 2009 note was: Deep ruby. A penetrating nose of moderately high-toned spicy black fruit trimmed in violets and floral notes that remains completely primary leads to supple but intense flavors that are rich and refined with excellent finishing energy and more refinement than I usually find here. I particularly like the fine balance and there is a sense of opulence here due to the heady spice notes. This should drink well earlier than most vintages. 91 points.

The beautifully well-detailed, balanced and energetic flavors possess excellent transparency on the vibrant and mouth coating if slightly spritzy finish. As was the case when I first reviewed this (see herein), there is a lingering inner mouth perfume that serves to make this most attractive and while this isn't a great Ech?zeaux in the context of the Domaine, it is undeniably pretty. Note that for my taste, this isn't quite at its peak though it's not so far away that it couldn't be enjoyed now. Tasted several times over the past few years with consistent results.

This is an absolutely stunning wine and every bit as good as the genuinely remarkable 2005.

The suave yet well-detailed medium-bodied flavors brim with dry extract before terminating in a very firm but not hard green tea-inflected finish that delivers excellent length and impressive depth. I very much like the balance and about the only nit is a hint of warmth. As I have observed several times recently, this wine continues to make real progress relative to what was typically good but not exceptional quality in the context of the appellation. 2012 definitely continues that upward progress.
